BRADLEY ARANT OBTAINS VICTORY FOR GOVERNOR RILEY IN ELECTION CASE
A team of Bradley Arant lawyers has obtained a 7-2 victory for Governor Bob Riley in an important election-law case in the U.S. Supreme Court. In Riley v. Kennedy, the Court held that Governor Riley's appointment of Juan Chastang to the Mobile County Commission was lawful under the Voting Rights Act. Justice Ginsburg wrote the opinion for the Court, and she was joined by Chief Justice Roberts and Justices Scalia, Kennedy, Thomas, Breyer, and Alito. Bradley Arant partner Kevin C. Newsom argued the case -- his fourth argument before the Court. He and John Neiman had primary responsibility for formulating the Governor's argument and drafting the briefs. Other attorneys on the briefs were Matthew H. Lembke, Scott Burnett Smith, John W. Rea and Andrew Brasher. Today's victory was Bradley Arant's second of the current Supreme Court Term.
